Just as Rome began with the twins Romulus and Remus, who were suckled by a she-wolf, so Vilnius, celebrating its 700th anniversary, began with the howling iron wolf in Gediminas’ dream. Folklore scholars consider him, just like the Roman she-wolf, the wolves of the Balkan peoples, the wolves of the Chinese and Mongolian legends, to be a totem – the founder of a new dynasty, a new community. Unlike the angry grey wolf, associated in our folklore with the devil and the bloodsucker who threatens to devour the whole world, the iron wolf symbolizes bravery, strength, intelligence and will. It is not without reason that since 1920, the name of the “Iron Wolf” has been given to Lithuania‘s paramilitary organizations and elite military units.
