Ancient Balts believed that all the trees were inhabited by ghosts of the dead, but most of all they revered and cherished the oak trees, considering them to be the abodes of gods. For Lithuanians, the oak groves were sacred, and not a single branch of the tree could be broken off. According to chronicles, in the centre of the Romovė sanctuary there was also an oak tree that was evergreen and divided into three equal parts for the three Prussian gods: Patulas, Perkūnas (English: Thunder) and Patrimpas. A sacred fire was always burning near the oak tree, and the pagan priest would offer sacrifices there to learn the will of gods through the rustling of leaves and to contact the world of the dead. The temple of Vilnius Šventaragis Valley was also located in an oak grove. It is not by coincidence that Gediminas had his prophetic dream here, when he fell asleep under an oak tree. Respect for these mighty trees has survived to this day.
